Why the best tradespeople still lose work online, and how to fix it.
You can be the best electrician, plumber or builder in your area and still lose the job to someone average with a better website. Here is the uncomfortable maths, and the fix.
Here is how customers actually choose a tradesperson in 2026: they search, they open two or three sites, and they form a judgement in about five seconds per site. Not a judgement about your workmanship, they cannot see that. A judgement about whether you seem professional, established and safe to hand money to. The site is standing in for you, and if it is slow, dated or awkward on a phone, the customer quietly moves on. You never even know the job existed.
The uncomfortable maths
Say an average job is worth £300, and a good one £2,000. If a poor website costs you even two enquiries a week, that is somewhere between £30,000 and £200,000 a year walking to a competitor who is no better on the tools than you. Against that, a proper website is not a cost. It is the cheapest employee you will ever hire, and it works weekends.
What a trades site needs to do
- Load fast and look right on a phone, because that is where nearly all your customers are.
- Show your area, your accreditations (NICEIC, NAPIT, Gas Safe) and real photos of real jobs.
- Make contact effortless: a phone number that dials, a quote form that takes a minute.
- Show up on Google for 'electrician in [your town]', which takes proper SEO foundations, not luck.
Visitors do not complain about a bad site. They just leave, and book someone who looks the part.
The proof
When Arctic Electrical in Chichester launched their new site, enquiries started arriving within the first week. Their own words: straightforward to deal with, fast, and the site actually brings work in. That is repeatable. It is not magic; it is a fast site, clear copy, trust signals in the right places and Google able to read all of it.
If you are on the tools all day and the website has been on the someday list for a year, that is exactly the situation we built our £850 Launch package for: one sharp page, copy written for you, live in about ten days. Book a 15-minute call and we will tell you honestly whether you need more than that. Most trades do not.
